BREAKING NEWS: Extra extra, this just in! The big news, on the surface, is that Pearson’s Candy (established 1909) acquired Bit-O-Honey (established 1924) last year and officially began production on Wednesday at its West Seventh Street factory in St. Paul.

But that’s just on the surface. Delve deeper, dear Scoop reader, and look closely at this picture of St. Paul Mayor Chris Coleman and Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Development Director Katie Clark Sieben.

Bit-O-Honey of a picture? Hizzoner dons a hairnet at Pearson's Candy. 'Nuff said.

What do you see? Yes, that’s the mayor wearing a hairnet. A HAIRNET. Not a snood, nor a caul, but the official hairnet.

That probably should not be too surprising, seeing as lots of people wear hairnets. Factory workers, lunch ladies, and this cosplay fashion designer who plays Spider-Girl at comic book conventions wear hairnets.

So seeing the mayor in a hairnet should probably not be so surprising, upon further reflection. What should be regarded with greater interest are all the people who do not wear hairnets but probably should, such as 14-year-old Natalie of Oregon.

She has company. For instance, these Bangkok bureaucrats, teachers, accountants, technicians and policemen who parade around at night as the “Far East Eses,” or Mexican-themed street gangsters, don’t wear hairnets.

If anyone needs hairnet advice, so they end up looking a bit less like hizzoner and a bit more like Commissioner Sieben while hairnet-adorned, check out this high humidity hairstyles series by Bombshell Beth on YouTube. And good luck with your victory curls.
