Clik here to view. The Scoop just received a phone call from a tipster claiming that Nathanial Khaliq had resigned the St. Paul City Council.
A quick call to Khaliq confirms otherwise. “Is this a practical joke?” said the council member, who got a much-needed chuckle out of the line of inquiry, as he is on his way to the funeral of a close family member.
Khaliq has held the Ward 1 seat — representing Frogtown and Summit-University — since the resignation of Melvin Carter III this summer. Voters on Tuesday will choose Khaliq’s replacement from a field of seven candidates.
The council member held a press conference Thursday about a shooting in the community, and had hoped to attend a memorial of sorts this upcoming Saturday for an old VFW building, a holdover from the “days of Rondo” and one of the last buildings to fall on the original Rondo Avenue. The family funeral is cutting short those plans.
