St. Paul Mayor Chris Coleman appeared on Garrison Keillor's "A Prairie Home Companion" this weekend and did the unthinkable -- the mayor declared Saturday, Feb. 28 "Minneapolis Day" in the city of St. Paul. The proclamation wasn't entirely flattering, but it did make mention of the recent article in the Atlantic Monthly, which has been criticized in some corners for conflating the two cities.

Here's a take-away:

Keillor on the mayor's marriage to Connie Coleman: "You're a very lucky man. A St. Paul boy from Cretin High School who got to marry a woman from Minneapolis, every boy's dream."

Coleman: "It's a mixed marriage."

The proclamation then begins thusly....

"Whereas Minneapolis, while not the state capitol, nor the gateway to the Great Lakes ... nor the home of Paul Bunyan... whereas the Atlantic article uses Minneapolis and the Twin Cities as synonyms, as for example in the reference to the Twin Cities' downtown area', now therefore I, Christopher Coleman, at no expense to taxpayers, hereby declare Saturday, Feb. 28, as 'Minneapolis Day' in the city of St. Paul, and particularly in its downtown, which is actually separate from downtown Minneapolis..."
