A fourth candidate is apparently in the running in Ward 1, which spans the Thomas-Dale (Frogtown) neighborhood, old Rondo in and around Selby Avenue, and a large section of University Avenue.
The Friends of Mohamed Said filed their registration and statement of organization with Ramsey County Elections, dated Jan. 23 (Friday). A City Hall Scoop call to Said was not immediately returned on Friday afternoon.
Declared challengers to sitting Council Member Dai Thao include Samakab Hussein, a self-employed accountant who has mentored Somali youth through sports, and Trahern Crews, who is demanding an increase to the minimum wage and reparations to African-Americans for slavery.
When former Council Member Melvin Carter III stepped down from office in 2013 to accept a state appointment, Dai Thao defeated a crowded field of candidates to win the Ward 1 seat in a special election.
